Return to Normality

Little Timmy's day started like so many days before it. He woke up early, raring to prepare for another fun-filled day of school. He showered, shaved, and gargled with All-Purpose Minty Fresh Gel before grabbing a fresh suit from the closet. Once dressed, he bolted downstairs for breakfast.

Because today was like many normal days, Timmy's mom had set breakfast out for him before she left for her work at the office. On the sleek table sat several plain bowls, cups, utensils, and one gaudy cardboard cube. The cereal box was festooned with maniacally grinning cartoonish figures, vivid blobs of random colors, and two simple words. "Grin Beenz" was printed in sparkling rainbow holographic letters that leapt off the box, appearing ever huger the farther away you held the box. Much like the cereal, the box was specifically designed to cause more and more discomfort the further away you tried to get from it.

Although today was like most other days for Timmy, his cereal was not his favorite one. Little Timmy usually prefers Crack Pops, but today his mom thought she'd add a little spice to his daily routine, since she wanted today to be special for her special little man. Ignoring the packaging, which was fluorescent enough to blind a game show host, Timmy ripped open the box and dumped a mound of it into his bowl. He moistened the cereal with some Moo Goo, and dug in. For a finale, Timmy slurped down a glass of Orangey Juicey.

Because of the totally normal nature of the day, Timmy knew his school bus was about to arrive, exactly on schedule. He grabbed his book bag from its hook next to the front door and ran joyously outside. He wasn't especially surprised to see that the bus hadn't arrived yet, though he was somewhat perplexed by what he did see. Timmy wasn't too surprised by the perplexing sight. He was used to seeing perplexing sights outside after breakfast, especially when his mom bought LSDelight instead of the usual Orangey Juicey.

On most normal school days (which this one closely resembled), Timmy would have been able to convince himself that anything unusual he saw in the road in front of his house was probably still his school bus, even when it appeared to be floating, flaming, or framed by a giant television set. Although it was still fairly normal, today was a special day. Timmy didn't see a bus of any kind in the street in front of his house. About fifteen feet above the street, he saw an object almost as large as a school bus, though shaped much more roundly, and apparently covered in a luminous, metallic substance. Still grinning, Timmy decided this was just too weird to be a post-breakfast hallucination.

The totally normal flying saucer hovered, humming, over Timmy's street. Except for the low sound of the space ship, the street was perfectly silent, just like normal. Timmy walked to the end of his driveway, and stood, staring at the silver vehicle in the sky.

Timmy's mom's voice sounded from the ship. "Good morning, honey. I hope you ate all of your breakfast today. Today is a very special day. I hope you're not too upset, but I thought we'd take the day off from school, okay? Say hi to Daddy when you see him."

Little Timmy continued to stare up at the silver saucer. A beam of hot blue light lanced down at Timmy, and he disappeared from the street. Soon the humming spaceship disappeared too. The street was again silent and empty, just like normal.
